In 2018, ISANA NZ professional development days are to be aligned with a project under the International Student Well-being Strategy. Professional development days will focus on aspects of the international student well-being strategy related to capacity building of education provider staff involved in enhancing international student well-being.
Costs
- ISANA NZ Members - $100
- Non-members - $184
Workshops have the theme of enhancing international student well-being and will include/ cover the following set of workshops:
- Communication within common inter-cultural contexts encountered with international students with specific reference to accommodation settings (primarily homestays), administration interactions, classroom contexts, and social and community contexts.
- Preparing staff and students to handle situations when life goes wrong. When things go wrong for international students, even small incidents can impact their well-being. Prior preparation and understanding is therefore an important aspect of pastoral care. Insight into how to prepare in advance and how this enables good handling of issues affecting the well-being of international students will be provided.
- Understanding and supporting positive pastoral outcomes for international students in transition. International students face many transitions, such as, crossing cultures in coming here to study, life transitions like journeying from adolescence to adulthood in a changed context (e.g. moving from high school to tertiary study), and post-academic transitions into work and re-entry home. Understanding the nature of transitions and configuring pastoral support provisions in the light of this will greatly benefit the overall well-being of your international students. This workshop will explore practical ways of doing so.
At each set of workshops there will also be:
- Updates and briefing from government agencies, in particular, Immigration NZ, NZQA and the Ministry of Education’s international unit. These are currently being arranged.
- Soundbites: a set of short interactive well-being focused sound bites are being arranged.
- Good food and networking will be part of the day.
- Communities of learning will be available for up to 3 internet sessions following each set of workshops. The focus of these is to reduces isolation and to assist with application. In addition, entry to relevant subsequent webinars being provided by ISANA Australia and ISANA NZ will be a growing additional resource for those attending ISANA NZ PD.
Mental Health First Aid Training

Community Engagement Training Days
Funding has been provided to ISANANZ under the International Student Well-being Strategy projects to provide a series of 10 community Engagement training days across New Zealand to build capacity amongst local communities, education providers and their student bodies both domestic and international, in order to enhance the engagement of international students with local communities and domestic students. The training focuses on how to organise programmes, provides assistance and resources for the training of volunteers, and strategies for getting started as well as case studies drawn from a set of previously tried and evaluated as successful, programmes.
The focus and intention of the community engagement training is to enhance the inclusion, belonging and participation of international students in New Zealand communities. This has immense spin off in terms of international relations, and mental and physical health amongst international students as well as building a powerful word of mouth marketing tool for New Zealand’s international education sector.
Participants in the community engagement training who develop promising plans as a result of the training will be able to apply to ISANA NZ for a seeding grant to implement the programme.
The Community Engagement training day is facilitated training and has some of the time taken up by working through ideas and planning preparation for potential programmes. The training is very suited to several people from the same education provider, community group or student group attending, with the purpose of working together and/or for persons seeking to lead and develop such initiatives and wishing to build exposure on how to, advice and resources.
This programme of training is funded by the Ministry of Education under the International Student Well-being Strategy and is free to all participants who register. Please note in some places in the event of over subscription we may have to restrict numbers of participants and/or arrange for each alternative times for training.
